St. Mary’s County has always been a favorite place to fish and for good reason!
This peninsula is bounded by the Patuxent and Potomac Rivers and the Chesapeake Bay so we’ve got wide open water, fast flowing rivers, serene tidal creeks and even a fine freshwater trophy bass lake! If you’re a serious fisherman or you’re just casting about for some fun, we can deliver. Our state parks and wildlife management areas provide great hunting terrains.
Charter Fishing
Our captains know the water — many have been fishing it all their lives.
Step aboard with one of our experienced captains and you are right where the action is — where the Potomac and the Chesapeake meet. Charter fishing is fantastic fun for friends and groups. Come fish some of the richest water around!
365 Days of Fishing Fun!
Recreational anglers can purchase a 365-Day Fishing License, which gives fisherman the ability to fish for a whole year, starting on the date of purchase!
Crabbing
Crab season is April 1 to December 15. Recreational crabbers may crab without a license anytime from docks, piers, bridges, boats, and shorelines using dip nets and any number of hand lines. How to do it? Try “chicken necking.” Tie a chicken neck on a string and let it sit. Pull it up slowly and feel if there is a crab on it. If so, keep going until you can net the crab! Remember to pull up slowly!

Bait, Tackle Outfitters & Rentals
Pick up everything you need (or everything you forgot) at our area bait and tackle shops and our outfitters.
These suppliers will help you find what you need to enjoy your time out on the water. Rent a kayak, arrange a lesson, try out a SUP!
Licensing
Going fishing or crabbing? You’ll need bait and tackle – but you may also need a license! How about bow hunting or muzzle loading? Our Bait and Tackle shops and our Outfitters are good sources, but go directly to Maryland’s Department of Natural Resources for comprehensive information.
Hunting
State parks, state forests, and Cooperative Wildlife Management Areas add up to nearly 5,000 acres of public hunting lands in St. Mary’s County.
Duck hunt along the Bay, or deer hunt in primarily undeveloped wildlands right in the heart of the county. Check out the Maryland Department of Natural Resources website for the info you need as you plan your expedition.
